Interesting Koi Fish Facts!

Koi fish are wonderfully colorful and they are descendants of the common carp although the only resemblance they bear today is in body shape and form.

The Japanese began cross-breeding koi more than 200 years ago and they are named nishikigoi, however well before the Japanese bred them there were writings about them in old Chinese books from 400 years ago – so these wonderful fish are nothing new!

However, the Japanese became the frontrunners to genetic koi breeding, as soon as they became aware that cross breeding of certain koi types would produce koi fish that had very distinctive and permanent colors and markings.

Many different techniques of cross-breeding were tested and perfected over a period of time with meticulous care and the end result of these trials created koi fish that were nothing short of stunning – in patterns and coloring.  

Since that time koi were predominantly bred for the purpose of displaying and people to enjoy, because of the elegance they displayed and their wonderful variety of colors and distinctive markings.

And because of Japanese diligence, koi breeders around the world can embrace the long kept secrets for new varieties… and they are almost without limit!

The science koi has also caught on around the globe and is an extremely popular and hobby and pastime. There are literally thousands of enthusiasts getting into it each year to breed koi, for showing /competing and a host of different reasons – but generally the majority of people keep koi because of the relaxation, enjoyment and their brilliant colors.

Being beside a still pond and observing these fish freely move by after a full-on day at work, relieves the tension of a sometimes fast paced life – it’s a real pleasure!
